The Ghana Project

Welcome to the blog of the Institute of Ranch Management – The Ghana Project! Myself (Walker Milhoan, TCU Ranch Management 2011) along with Trey Milhoan (TCU RM 2013) are here in Accra, Ghana after a grueling 5 hour flight from San Diego to JFK, a 7 1/2 hour layover, and 12 hours on Delta flight 26 across the Atlantic. The mission: to develop the Aveyime Cattle Ranch into a profitable entity with philanthropic goals of educating the local cattlemen about modern beef production practices. The ranch is located in the Lower Volta Region of Ghana, a coastal plain that looks and feels almost exactly like South Texas.

Saturday was an amazing day that included an adventurous tour of the Greater Accra area where we got a healthy sightseeing dose of the market district from our friends at  Agricon Global, and we got to see a major part of one of West Africa's most populous metro areas. Getting around this city should only be attempted by experienced professionals as we hit three people with our side-view mirror because navigating these busy streets is like trying to drive an 18 wheeler through an underground parking garage full of vehicles!

Market District
A breath of fresh air as this street is fairly uncluttered.

The tour of the market district gave us a whole new perspective on China's manufacturing might as nearly 85% of the goods being sold came from that part of the world. The streets are engulfed with textiles, shoes, cooking utensils, saws, bricks, and everything in between. Ghana imports nearly 90% of the products it consumes and this goes for beef and poultry as well; hence the reason for our presence at the Aveyime Ranch. The Ghanaians have the fastest growing economy on the African continent with an estimated GDP of nearly 13.5% and it's this kind of growth that is creating a strong demand for a better diet, and to many, that improved diet includes the high quality protein of beef!

As a side note: the picture below took me back to my younger years when I admired and emulated the TGR boys. Guys like Micah Black, Todd Jones, and Dean Conway who starred in radical ski porn movies like Harvest, Mind the Addiction, and The Realm were legends then and now!  To witness a Teton Gravity Research sticker plastered on the back of a black Subaru in the middle of Accra, Ghana blew my mind!

Teton Gravity Research in Accra, Ghana!
Stay tuned for more news from the beautiful country of Ghana!
